Baghouse Basics

An industrial baghouse dust collector, when paired with an industrial blower, pulls in air and cleans dust, dirt and other particulate matter generated by manufacturing processes from it.

As part of an , baghouses help provide workers with a safer environment by improving air quality, reducing fire and explosion hazards, removing hazardous particulates and improving productivity through ease-of-maintenance. Baghouse dust collectors also prevent particulate matter from entering the atmosphere. How does a baghouse system work? That’s where engineering and design play a key role.

How a Baghouse Works: Baghouse Dust Collector Working Principles

While they鈥檙e built in different designs and sizes, all baghouses essentially operate in the same way. Air from an industrial environment enters a baghouse through an air inlet or duct. The baghouse contains rows of fabric tube-shaped bags, which filter the particulate matter and other contaminants from the air. As the air passes through the fabric, dust and other particles are separated from the air. Smaller particulates collect on the bags and larger particulates fall into a hopper below.

baghouse graphic

After the air is filtered, it moves out of the baghouse through a clean air outlet or duct. A cleaning mechanism or system (a few examples of these mechanisms are outlined below) also works to remove built-up particulate from the fabric bags, causing it to fall into the hopper below.

Baghouse Dust Collector Types

While baghouse dust collector systems all work in the same basic way, there are a few different varieties.

  • Reverse air dust collectors, for example, use a low-pressure reversed flow to backflush the air through the filter bags.
  • Pulse jet dust collectors, meanwhile, use puffs of pressurized air, pulsing air through the filters.
  • Shaker dust collectors are used in facilities where compressed air is impractical, like mines. These dust collectors use mechanics to shake dust from the filter bags and are common for certain particulates more easily separated from filters, like chicken dander and feathers.

淫乱社区 and Baghouse Dust Collectors

淫乱社区 has designed, , and hundreds of baghouse dust collection systems across a variety of industries, including mining, pulp and paper, foundries and beyond. Each system is designed to specifically address particle types, explosion protection guidelines, regulatory emission rates and much more. Whether built for fumes, fine or heavy dust, each custom-engineered baghouse provides cleaner and safer facilities and workplaces.

How Do Baghouses Work For You?

Now with an understanding of how a baghouse works, you can decide whether an industrial baghouse dust collector is the solution for you.

Understanding Problems and Finding Solutions

A fully functional baghouse dust collector is important for the safety of your employees and your business. When problems arise鈥攅ven small ones鈥攊t puts your operation at risk of shutdowns, exposes you to regulatory citations and can impact your bottom line. Fortunately, some common problems are simple to diagnose and have affordable solutions. Here鈥檚 a guide to baghouse troubleshooting.

Common Baghouse Problems

High Differential Pressure and/or Short Bag Life

Experiencing high differential pressure or unexpectedly short bag life are common issues in baghouse systems.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

The most common source of problems with baghouses arise from poor bag installation, a faulty differential pressure gauge, leakage through the discharge device, valve and solenoid failures, wet or oily compressed air, a faulty timer or wet bags.

Probable Cause: Design Problems

Design-related issues are a potential culprit when encountering high differential pressure or reduced bag life. Possibilities include high dust loading, high air-to-cloth ratio, high can velocity, improper fabric or surface treatment or an improper or undersized discharge device.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

During the baghouse troubleshooting process, consider whether operational issues such as improper start-up sequence, improper damper settings or high moisture content and lower temperature in the gas stream may be the cause.

Low Differential Pressure

Low differential pressure in a baghouse signals underlying issues that might affect performance.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

Operational issues can often result in low differential pressure, primarily due to over-cleaning of bags due to excessive pulse pressure or pulse frequency.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

Regular maintenance is key to ensuring consistent differential pressure. Look for plugged lines or broken or uncoupled manometer lines.

Dust Emission to Atmosphere

Baghouse dusting can reduce efficiency and risk non-compliance.

Probable Cause: Design Problems

Design flaws can lead to baghouse dusting issues. In baghouse troubleshooting, look for an extremely high air-to-cloth ratio, poor seal arrangement, extremely fine dust (or very fine spherical particles), the wrong fabric or surface treatment or the wrong bag size.

Operational Problems

Operational settings and procedures can also contribute to baghouse dusting. Consider whether a wrong damper setting or poor start-up procedure are the culprit.

Maintenance Problems

On the maintenance side, several issues can lead to baghouse dusting. They include poor bag installation or seal, tubesheet leaks, holes in bags or bad diaphragms or solenoids.

Puffing Back

Puffing back is when dust re-enters the dirty air stream.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

If operational causes lead to puffing back, it鈥檚 likely from a high pressure drop across the baghouse, low system fan speed or improper duct balancing.

Maintenance Problems

Plugged duct lines and poor hood designs are two maintenance causes to consider.

Excessive Hopper Build-up

Probable Cause: Design Problems

Among the reasons design could play a role in excessive build-up in the hopper: a too-slow or faulty rotary air lock, the outlet is too small, there鈥檚 an improper discharge device or improper hopper slope.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

The failure to initiate the discharge device prior to start-up or operate the discharge device after the fan has shut down may cause excessive build-up in the hopper.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

Maintenance issues could lead to excessive hopper build-up when the rotary air lock needs rebuilding, there鈥檚 excessive rust or build-up on the hopper walls or material has become packed and won鈥檛 flow.

Low Dust Discharge

A few operational or maintenance issues can lead to the insufficient removal of collected dust from the baghouse hopper or discharge system.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

Leakage at discharge points and re-entrainment of dust on filter bags can be operational causes of low dust discharge.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

A malfunction of the discharge valve, screw conveyer or material transfer equipment might be an issue. Or re-entrainment of dust within the collector could be due to possible leaks in the hopper.

Holes in Bags

There are many potential causes when holes are found in bags.

Probable Cause: Design Problems

Improper fabric, an inlet abrasion from excessive inlet velocity or turbulence or bags rubbing together a warped tubesheet could create holes.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

Too-high inlet temperature, sparks in the inlet gas stream, or high moisture mixed with moderate heat causing hydrolysis are possible culprits.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

A few maintenance issues need investigating, including the failure to clean the tubesheet (leading to abrasion from the inside), bent cages rubbing against the walls or each other, excessive pulse cleaning, bags damaged during installation, broken cage wires, or improper bag installation.

Loud or Unusual Noises

Noises can cause headaches in more ways than one. Either maintenance issues or, in the case of a pulse jet baghouse, the pulse system may be to blame.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

Vibrations, banging of moving parts or squealing of belt drives can cause excessive noise. Addressing these maintenance issues will generally address the noise issue.

Probable Cause: Pulse System

Unexpected noises can be caused by valves not properly pulsing or a compressed air leak in a pulse jet baghouse.

Baghouse Corrosion

When you see signs of corrosion, here鈥檚 where to begin your baghouse troubleshooting.

Probable Cause: Operational Problems

Dew point excursions and improper shutdowns and startups can lead to corrosion.

Probable Cause: Maintenance Problems

Improper paint, material, or application, improper insulation and emission of nearby equipment are also common corrosion causes.

Baghouse Troubleshooting: When to Seek Outside Support

淫乱社区 Engineers Explain the Importance of Baghouse Leak Detection Testing

Transcript

Who needs to do a baghouse leak detection test?

Anyone who owns or operates a dry-type dust collector, such as a baghouse or cartridge collector, needs to do a baghouse leak detection test.

How often do you need to do a leak detection test?

Leak detection tests should be done every time you do a filter change. Some regulatory requirements dictate that leak detections need to be done on an annual basis, or a six-month basis, and then also any time you suspect a leak in your system, a leak test is good to help diagnose where that leak is coming from.

What are the risks of not doing a leak detection test?

Filter changes are a fairly expensive operation, so not doing a leak detection test could mean all the money you spent on that filter change is thrown out because of an improper installation.

Additional reasons to conduct these tests, and reasons to mitigate the risk by doing them, is because a hole in your filter could mean a failure to comply with regulatory requirements.

Step by step: The baghouse leak detection system

Before conducting the test, you鈥檙e going to want to consult your safety department to ensure that all lockout, tagout and confined space procedures are followed for this procedure.

Step one is we are going to be inserting the dye into the system. In this case, we鈥檙e going to insert the dye (or baghouse leak detection powder) into the hopper here. [In your system, dye may need to be inserted into the collection ductwork.]

Now that our dyes have been added, we鈥檝e ensured that our filters are evenly coated, we are going to do an inspection of the clean-air side of our bags to ensure that none of the dye made it through or around the filters and ensure we have a nice, good installation.

Now we鈥檙e up on the clean-air section of the baghouse. Because this thing is so small, we can actually lift off the entire roof of it. So first I鈥檓 going to do a quick initial inspection to see if I see any dye. Usually, if there鈥檚 a major leak, you鈥檒l see it instantaneously. But now that we don鈥檛 see any, we鈥檙e going to actually do the blacklight portion and turn off the lights and see what we can see.

All right. Since in our test we didn鈥檛 see any leaks, we wanted to show you we scattered some dye around here and wanted to show you what it would look like if there was a leak and how vividly that shows up.

Whether you purchased your baghouse from 淫乱社区 or not, 淫乱社区 can assist in these leak detection tests and help diagnose problems and come up with long-term solutions.

Timely maintenance ideas for optimal baghouse operation and maintenance

A high-quality baghouse is crucial to your operation, for both the safety of your employees and your business. Failures can expose your business to risks of shutdowns, regulatory penalties and more. When 淫乱社区 teams are on-site commissioning a new industrial baghouse, we train your team to spot and address maintenance issues from day one. Alternatively, 淫乱社区 can manage these maintenance issues for you as part of an ongoing maintenance plan.

Maintenance issue #1: Moisture

Monitoring moisture is the top maintenance priority to ensure your baghouse dust collection system remains fully operational. Moisture can enter an industrial baghouse in a variety of ways. Structural compromises such as holes or faulty seals are one example. Another occurs when a production process contains higher moisture or oil, which leads to sticky dust. When moisture enters a baghouse environment, it can quickly wreak havoc. High moisture and moderate heat can cause hydrolysis, a chemical breakdown causing holes in bags, that lead to operational issues. Additionally, moisture and wet dust may affix to and blind off the filters, negatively impacting filter life and reducing the efficiency of the system.

Maintenance issue #2: Dust concentration

When a visible emissions plume comes out of a stack or dust is visible in the clean air section of the collector, maintenance must focus on finding the cause of this baghouse failure. This is especially true for applications involving readily oxidizable dust, where a baghouse鈥檚 fabric filter may pose a fire or explosion hazard when a spark or flame is introduced. Baghouse failure can occur when the wrong fabric or surface treatment is present in a baghouse. Alternatively, it may result from poor bag installation and seals, leaks in a tubesheet, holes in a bag, failing diaphragms or solenoids. Maintenance must focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of the dust leak to prevent more severe issues from occurring.

Maintenance issue #3: Shortened bag life

Dust collection efficiency and ease of both operation and maintenance are common reasons air quality engineers choose baghouses for industrial ventilation. For baghouse filter cleaning, you can use an on-demand system that only cleans when directed, or an automatic system that operates on a regular timer. In both cases, compressed air is used to remove dust from the collector for disposal, ensuring fabric filters continue to operate efficiently. When fabric filter life is shortened, maintenance issues may be the culprit. In this scenario, check bag installation to ensure proper fit and seal and inspect pressure gauges, timers, valves and solenoids for failures.

Again, it is important to choose the correct installation at the start, and then monitor for changes in your production and environment. Abrasiveness, acidity or moisture levels of the dust you are collecting may influence filter lifespan. Following installation, 淫乱社区 engineers will train your team to identify performance issues and replace filters. Alternatively, use this dust collector bag replacement tutorial as a guide.

Maintenance issue #4: Erosion

If the dust you collect has abrasive characteristics, eventually it will do what abrasives do: eat holes in your baghouse equipment and create additional dust from inside the system. Erosion is a particular challenge in mining facilities and other manufacturing that use precious metals, frac sand, iron ore, lime and similar materials. Dust from these materials can damage the collectors, but you may notice it first in your ductwork. At 淫乱社区, our team designs, fabricates and installs durable, long-lasting dust collectors and material handling equipment specifically to address this issue.

Baghouse Operation and Maintenance Guidelines

While your baghouse is custom built for your facility, a standard maintenance approach may help you identify common maintenance issues affecting baghouse operation. Your construction team will have specific recommendations for your baghouse:

淫乱社区鈥檚 Role as an Industrial Ventilation System Manufacturer

When planning an industrial ventilation project, the 淫乱社区 design, engineering and fabrication team takes the following factors into account:

Facility Evaluation

淫乱社区 engineers conduct on-site evaluations to determine the ideal design for each industrial ventilation system they fabricate. While evaluating the facility, our team measures existing infrastructure to ensure the seamless integration of a new ventilation system.

Production Process Review

Next, the 淫乱社区 team will review the production process. This helps us evaluate the most effective placement for hoods and ducts to capture and remove particulate matter or fumes. We also ensure appropriate materials, sizes and durability for an effective process.

Contaminants Identification

Particulate matter varies per industry, from abrasive dust to noxious fumes and anything in between. The type of contaminant determines which material should be used for duct fabrication. Silica, for example, requires ducts designed to withstand the wear and tear of an abrasive particulate matter. Industrial ventilation system manufacturers can fabricate durable ducts with the most suitable material type for a lasting solution.

Regulatory Requirements Gathering

Based on the industry and application, stringent local, state and federal standards and regulations must be met such as (OSHA), (MSHA), (EPA), (NFPA) and local environmental authorities. 淫乱社区鈥檚 design, engineering, manufacturing and installation processes are designed to help facilities managers meet these requirements.

Evaluating Off-the-Shelf vs. Custom Industrial Ventilation System Design

Off the Shelf

Some companies purchase a premade dust collector and then build a system around that. However, a one-size-fits-all approach may not be a good fit for your space and goals. When the unit is not designed with the rest of system in mind, problems can arise including:

  • Difficult maintenance
  • Particulate matter accumulation
  • Expenses for rework or replacement
  • Ineffective collection
  • Waste handling issues
  • Overuse of valuable production footprint

When evaluating a new industrial ventilation system, a turnkey solutions provider like 淫乱社区 can help evaluate whether these risks or others will affect your project.

Custom Design

A custom design begins with the end goal in mind for an efficient, lasting solution. It starts with a thorough site assessment and takes all factors into account including the industry, process, application, contaminant and facility size and layout. When you opt for a customized design, guesswork and assumptions are eliminated as accuracy and efficiency are maximized.

Additionally, working with a single team allows for easy back and forth communication throughout the entire process and offers continual support. It creates an opportunity to evaluate system design before installation using 3D system design and . This leads to fewer costly mistakes, better air quality and energy efficiency. Plus, there are no unpleasant surprises during installation.

Your ultimate guide to an MSHA-compliant mining process facility

published regulatory change for mining facilities鈥 air quality related to respirable crystalline silica in April 2024, with changes taking effect June 17, 2024. Here, we鈥檒l answer your most pressing questions to help you meet the MSHA respirable crystalline silica standard in your facility.

What is the MSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard?

MSHA, the , made the decision to follow in 鈥檚 footsteps, dramatically cutting the allowable amount of respirable crystalline silica (aka RCS) in the atmosphere of mining processing facilities. According to MSHA, .

What is the respirable crystalline silica dust limit?

The proposed MSHA rule caps silica exposure at or below 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air for a full-shift exposure. This means workers cannot be exposed to more than a sugar sized packet of silica in a space the size of a football field during a single 8-hour shift.

Who will be affected by the MSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard?

This initiative will apply to mining industries where silica is released, e.g.: quarries, fracking, limestone mines, cement manufacturing facilities, cement processing facilities, coal mines, and metal and nonmetal (MNM) mines.

Why establish an MSHA respirable crystalline silica standard?

Inhaling crystalline silica is linked to considerable risks to workers鈥 health, including lung disease, cancer, COPD and kidney disease. These health conditions may cause disabilities or death, according to MSHA.

The responsibility of these risks is a heavy load to carry. MSHA is calling on companies to take responsibility for their team members鈥 health.聽

When will this new standard take effect? Once it does take effect, how long does an organization have to become compliant?

With the administrative rulemaking process complete, the MSHA respirable crystalline silica standard takes effect on June 17, 2024. Mining operators must conduct a qualitative assessment on changes that would affect exposure eighteen:
鈥 Coal mines are required to meet the new MSHA respirable crystalline silica standard on April 15, 2025.
鈥 Metal and nonmetal mines are required to meet the MSHA respirable crystalline silica standard on April 8, 2026.

The new rule does not allow the use of respiratory protection for compliance, a key difference from OSHA鈥檚 silica rule. Mining operators must collect a baseline test for miners鈥 exposure before the effective date, conduct a three-month follow-up and implement periodic testing thereafter.

Sources:

As the compliance deadline nears, competition for engineering services to help facilities meet the new MSHA standards is expected to be fierce. Now is the ideal time to begin analysis and mitigation.

Does this regulation conflict with the OSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard?

It does not. OSHA doesn鈥檛 have jurisdiction over on-site mining materials production facilities.

What process determines the need to reduce respirable crystalline silica?

1. Get an industrial hygienist worksite analysis, also known as an RCS analysis.
2. Bring the analysis to 淫乱社区. Working collaboratively with facilities personnel and the industrial hygienist, 淫乱社区 project engineers will review your results and help identify industrial ventilation system weaknesses causing particulate exposures.

Work with 淫乱社区 and mining equipment OEMs to formulate a plan to mitigate your risk of exposure and fines.

What is the first step in reducing crystalline silica exposure?

You may need to draft a crystalline silica exposure control plan. The team at 淫乱社区 can help you get started.

How can 淫乱社区 help our company meet the new respirable crystalline silica standard?

淫乱社区 will start by evaluating your industrial dust collection system. We will compare it to your respirable silica analysis (also known as an RCS analysis) and give you a diagnosis.

We typically find one of these three potential issues is at play:
鈥 Undersized industrial ventilation system
鈥 Poorly functioning mining ventilation system

Improper use of the ventilation system Here at 淫乱社区, our solutions for mitigating respirable crystalline silica dust range from developing better enclosures and improved hood designs.

What experience does 淫乱社区 have in reducing respirable crystalline silica exposure?

淫乱社区 has helped dozens of companies meet the OSHA standard for crystalline silica exposure in the past, and we鈥檙e now ready to help your company get ahead of the new MSHA compliance standards. In fact, 淫乱社区 project engineers are trained and ready to mobilize.

Our clear understanding of how mining processing works equips us to quickly find your suspected exposures and develop strategies for your company鈥檚 respirable crystalline silica exposure control plan.

When is the right time to start a crystalline silica exposure control plan?

Now. By getting started sooner rather than later, you can stay ahead of the post-implementation demand.

Navigate the proposed respirable crystalline silica standard with a proven partner. Talk with an 淫乱社区 project engineer today. It鈥檚 the first step you can take toward meeting the proposed MSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard.

When you鈥檙e on the hunt for an industrial ventilation fabrication company, you want a partner who knows how to do it right the first time. With so many options, how do you discern who will provide both what you want and what you need?

Project managers often make this mistake when searching for an industrial ventilation fabrication company.

Many project managers find themselves in a predicament after hiring the lowest bidder over the most detailed. They may need another metal fabrication contractor to come in after the first and do it correctly, effectively doubling or tripling their budget.

This guide helps you avoid the all-too-common pitfalls.

Tip #1: Ask about history and metal fabrication experience

There is no way around it: To become a skilled metal fabricator; one needs years of experience.

A competent custom industrial ventilation fabrication company will have a dense portfolio of projects, a long history of being in business and an experienced team. When you put in an inquiry, this should be one of the first questions you ask.

Tip #2: For custom metal fabrication, solicit a transparent, detailed project scope

Too often, when project managers sign with a company that offers the lowest bid, they later find the contractor was not detailed enough in their scope of work. That often results in a flurry of change orders or project rework. One way to avoid this mistake is by asking for a bid sample up front. This will allow you to see the detail at which a project is scoped and to provide feedback in advance of the bid being sent.

Tip #3: Ask if the company offers more than metal fabrication services

Engineering and design are typically handled by separate organizations. When different organizations handle various parts of the same project, disconnects in communication, process and progress can result.

淫乱社区, on the other hand, is a full-service industrial ventilation design, engineering, manufacturing and installation company. That means the 淫乱社区 team oversees both engineering and design of your industrial ventilation system. This cuts the lags between handoffs lowering the risk of miscommunication. The result: Projects are more efficient and effective.

Ask the question up front, 鈥淚s your team capable of managing this project from start to finish? If not, what aspects are you willing to cover and how do you manage the transitions?鈥

Tip #4: Confirm metal fabrication equipment upgrade schedules

Any custom industrial ventilation fabrication company will be regularly updating and upgrading equipment for two reasons:

  • Poorly updated equipment creates subpar products
  • Equipment failures cause delays in project progress

Be sure and ask any prospective industrial ventilation manufacturer about current equipment, planned upgrades and if they have contingencies in place to mitigate equipment failure.

Tip #5: Find out how and when their project managers will be communicating with you

Last but not least, set clear expectations around how and when you will hear from your project manager. At what points in the project will they be communicating with you? How and when will delays or scope changes be addressed? Creating clear guidelines for communications up front sets you and your new project manager up for a successful professional relationship.

Bonus tip: safety plan

Does your prospective industrial ventilation fabrication company have a safety plan in place? Because safety incidents on a jobsite can affect your productivity, it鈥檚 critical to ask about safety training, safety plans and safety record.

Industrial ventilation company selection

Gathering the information outlined above can help you ensure the industrial ventilation company you select is the partner you want.

淫乱社区 has proudly been in the metal fabrication business for over 30 years, uses the most up-to-date equipment, and offers start-to-finish industrial ventilation design, engineering, custom metal fabrication and installation services on all of our custom projects.

How to Scope an Industrial Ventilation Project

Thank you for considering 淫乱社区. for your ventilation project. Whether you need a full ventilation system engineered from the ground up or have a maintenance need, your goal can be accomplished with the right solution at a competitive cost.

This guide covers the details required to:

  • Assess your needs
  • Define goals
  • Establish timelines
  • Identify resources
  • Address challenges
  • Determine costs
  • Specify deliverables and exclusions

淫乱社区鈥檚 experienced team is here to help you along the way, and we look forward to serving you from start to finish.

The Value of Proficient Planning

A detailed project scope sets you up for a smooth, successful ventilation project.

This initial phase of gathering critical information reduces your risk and helps provide the best outcome. With sufficient planning and complete information, you鈥檒l avoid surprise costs and unexpected downtime. The scope can also be referred to throughout the project to keep contractors on task.

Why Does This Matter to You?

Imagine that a customer receives four quotes with a vast pricing range for an industrial ventilation system. They select the least expensive option, but don鈥檛 realize why the quote is so much cheaper. Because important details about their unique building layout are missing from the scope, they soon find out that the lower-cost 鈥渙ne-size-fits-all鈥 system doesn鈥檛 fit. Frustrations build as additional quotes and change orders are needed to address the issues, the project gets behind schedule and ends up over budget.

Now picture a customer who needs a dust collector. Their project goals and deliverables aren鈥檛 clearly stated when they initiate the project. Trouble soon arises when the customer realizes their moist contaminant with heavy loading, which they didn鈥檛 mention in the scope, plugs the undersized cartridge collector they received. Due to the reduced system performance, targets aren鈥檛 met, resulting in costly fines and health risks to the employees. The relationship with the vendor becomes strained, time is consumed and costs rise as they work to correct the issue.

Having a well-developed scope can help avoid these types of costly and time-consuming issues.

The Basics

The information you initially provide helps build the foundation for an accurate quote, the best solution and maximum cost savings. Your industry, goals and other details will be considered to develop a thorough understanding of your project, which allows your needs to be met. Let鈥檚 begin with an overview of your business and industry.

Preferred Contacts

  • Who is the main point of contact for this project scope?
  • What is your preferred method of contact? Phone / Email / Text / Video Conferencing
  • Who else needs to be involved? e.g., EH&S, operations, engineering, project management, etc.

Work Site Details

  • Where is the location of the work site?
  • Will local labor be utilized?

Industry Details

  • What is your industry?
  • Which materials are involved?
  • What special requirements come with your industry? (e.g., duct work material type, restrictions on finish and joint quality, high wear)

Define Your Goal

  • What do you need to accomplish?

Project Scope Guide

Past and Present Challenges

Past challenges help provide a full picture of today鈥檚 project needs.

  • What issues have you dealt with in the past?
  • How have past issues been solved?
  • How long has the issue been a problem?
  • What is the current need?
  • What issues do you foresee with your upcoming project or maintenance?
  • What are the special requirements for your project?

Establishing a Timeline

It鈥檚 important to stay on track with minimal interruptions to your operations. By documenting your needs, a thorough plan will be devised to reduce downtime and keep you on schedule.

  • What shifts do you operate?
  • Do you have existing planned downtime for maintenance?
  • Can installation take place during all shifts without interruption to production?
  • When is your desired completion date?
  • Is there flexibility with your desired completion date?

Existing Equipment Information

If your project involves existing equipment, a ventilation solution will be developed for the best fit and results.

  • Provide existing equipment manufacturer data if possible.
  • Provide equipment serial numbers if possible.
  • Provide pictures if possible.
  • Provide any known issues with current equipment or changes that have been made since original installation date.

Space Constraints

Spacing plays an important role in determining the right ventilation solution.

  • What space constraints exist at your facility?
  • Provide measurements if possible, using Imperial measurements.
  • Provide pictures if possible.

Surface Preparation and Paint

The proper surface treatments will be determined for your industry. What are your surface preparation requirements?

  • Galvanized
  • Passivation
  • Paint
  • Other

On-Site Visit

Observing your production process in person allows a comprehensive and accurate assessment of your ventilation.

  • Ideally, it鈥檚 best to assess your production and ventilation operations in action. Is this possible? Or must production be shut down?
  • If possible, have operators, a foreman and the project contact on-site for the assessment.
  • Air readings will be taken, and space constraints will be measured.
  • Your processes will be observed, and you may receive recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • The best solution will be determined for long-term results.
  • Site constraints, unknown to the customer, may be identified with 淫乱社区鈥檚 experienced teams extensive installation expertise.

What’s Next

Once you submit your project scope, your needs will be evaluated and additional questions may follow as needed. You鈥檒l receive recommendations and a competitive quote to meet our ventilation needs.

Thank you for the opportunity to earn your business.

What causes fabrication failure?

Where can sheet metal ductwork fabrication go wrong? It starts with improper material selection. If an abrasive particulate such as silica isn鈥檛 matched with an abrasive-resistant duct material, the duct will not withstand wear and tear over time. Incorrect thickness can also lead to premature wear when the duct is too thin for the application鈥檚 pressure or abrasiveness. Poor welding can also affect the structural integrity of the duct, which causes premature failure.

Inferior ductwork fabrication comes with hidden costs

Problems often arise when sheet metal duct fabrication doesn鈥檛 meet quality standards. Time may pass before leaks and corrosion are identified, leading to more extensive damage and frequent repairs. Risky, expensive and time-consuming issues may include:

  • Structural failure: Ductwork could fail and fall out of the ceiling causing damage to buildings, equipment, and creating safety risks
  • Subsequent costs: Wasted materials and downtime needed for repairs result in material replacement costs and lost revenue.
  • Potential health issues: When ductwork is faulty, employees may be exposed to dangerous particulates that lead to hazardous health problems.
  • Increased energy costs: Improper ductwork may not be able to handle necessary air flow, causing energy inefficiency.
  • Compliance violations: Faulty ducts may cause noxious fumes to be released into the air or harmful particulates to remain in employee work areas. These compliance violations may result in costly fines.

Expensive system replacement may be needed when these issues go by undetected for long periods of time. When dust settles within ductwork, it can decrease the capture effectiveness of the hood, resulting in costly replacements.

How to ensure quality for your application

A quality industrial ventilation partner will conduct a thorough evaluation of your industry, products and air stream condition to help ensure proper sheet metal ductwork fabrication. The right ductwork material and design will be determined by whether your product is sticky, moist, dry or in vapor form. An assessment of the speed of materials passing through the ductwork also determines the proper design requirements.

Common ductwork materials per industry include:

  • Foundry: Mild steel (hot/cold rolled)
  • Paper: Aluminum and stainless steel
  • Mining: Abrasion-resistant or stainless-steel
  • Silica: Abrasion-resistant steel

Materials may vary based on individual applications.
